NEET Study Material & Notes: Subject-wise Guide

By StudyZone Editorial Team · Last updated · 6 min read

The most important NEET study material is free: NCERT textbooks for Class 11 and 12 (Physics, Chemistry and Biology), NCERT Exemplar problems and previous years' NEET papers. Biology is half the paper, so read NCERT Biology line by line and make diagram notes. Make formula sheets for Physics and reaction or concept sheets for Chemistry, and revise them repeatedly. You can download free NEET notes shared by other students on StudyZone.

What is the NEET UG exam pattern?

NEET UG is a single 3-hour objective paper on Physics, Chemistry and Biology, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). In the 2025 exam, the paper had 180 compulsory questions for 720 marks, with +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one.

SubjectQuestionsMarks
Physics45180
Chemistry45180
Biology (Botany + Zoology)90360
Total180720

Biology alone is worth half the total marks, which is why it should get the most time and the most careful notes.

Which free study material is essential for NEET?

  1. NCERT textbooks for Class 11 and 12 in Physics, Chemistry and Biology (free PDFs on the NCERT website). The NEET syllabus is closely based on them.
  2. NCERT Exemplar problem books for extra practice at a slightly higher level.
  3. Previous years' NEET papers, to understand the question style and which topics repeat.
  4. The official NEET UG syllabus and information bulletin from NTA, which confirm the exact topics and exam rules for the year.

Tip: Many Biology questions come straight from NCERT lines, diagrams and tables, including the summaries at the end of chapters. Do not skip them.

How should you prepare NEET Biology notes?

For Biology, make NCERT-based notes with diagrams, tables and one-line facts, chapter by chapter.

  • Diagram notes: redraw and label key diagrams (heart, nephron, flower structure, DNA replication) and add one line on the function of each part.
  • Tables for classification: kingdoms, plant families, hormones and their functions, diseases and their causes.
  • Process flowcharts: photosynthesis, respiration, the menstrual cycle, protein synthesis.
  • "Exception" lists: examples that break the general rule are favourite NEET questions.

High-weight areas that most students cover in depth include genetics and evolution, human physiology, plant physiology, reproduction, cell biology, ecology and biotechnology. Check previous papers to see how often each comes up.

How should you prepare NEET Chemistry notes?

Split Chemistry notes into Physical, Organic and Inorganic, because each needs a different style.

PartWhat to noteFormat
Physical ChemistryFormulas, units, solved numericals, common trapsFormula sheet + worked examples
Organic ChemistryReaction mechanisms, named reactions, reagents, conversionsReaction charts and flowcharts
Inorganic ChemistryPeriodic trends, exceptions, properties of elements and compoundsNCERT-based tables and fact lists

Inorganic Chemistry is the most NCERT-dependent part, so read the textbook carefully and keep your notes close to its wording.

How should you prepare NEET Physics notes?

Physics notes should be short: formulas, concepts and a few solved problems for each chapter. Physics marks come from practice, so spend more time solving questions than writing notes.

  • One formula sheet per chapter with units and conditions ("valid only when acceleration is constant").
  • A list of standard results (for example, moment of inertia of common shapes).
  • A "mistakes" page: sign errors, unit conversions and misread questions from your mock tests.

Physics overlaps heavily with JEE Main, so the IIT-JEE notes on StudyZone are useful extra practice material.

How do you read NCERT effectively for NEET?

Read each NCERT chapter at least three times, with a different goal each time.

  1. First reading – understand. Read the chapter fully and make your main notes.
  2. Second reading – mark. Underline lines that state facts, exceptions, numbers and examples, and add them to your notes.
  3. Third reading – test. Solve the chapter's previous NEET questions and NCERT exercises, then re-read only the parts you got wrong.

Do not skip the boxed information, tables, figure captions and chapter summaries. They are often the source of tricky one-line questions.

What mistakes should NEET aspirants avoid with study material?

  • Buying many reference books and never finishing NCERT properly.
  • Spending more time making notes than solving questions, especially for Physics.
  • Ignoring Inorganic Chemistry until the end, when it needs repeated revision.
  • Not analysing mock tests, so the same mistakes keep repeating.
  • Using notes from unverified sources without checking them against NCERT.

What is a good NEET revision plan using your notes?

StageWhat to do
While learningRead NCERT, make chapter notes, solve NCERT and Exemplar questions
After each unitMake one-page revision sheets and flashcards for facts
Mock test phaseTake full-length tests, note every mistake, update your notes
Last 4–6 weeksRevise only from notes, sheets and your mistake list; re-read NCERT Biology

Flashcards with spaced repetition work very well for Biology facts and Inorganic Chemistry. See AI and flashcard tools for study notes for options.

Should you use shared NEET notes or make your own?

Make your own notes for understanding, and use shared notes to fill gaps and save time. Shared notes from students who scored well show you what they found important, and short revision notes are especially useful close to the exam.

On StudyZone, you can preview the first page of any NEET note before downloading, and every note is reviewed before it is published. If you have made good notes yourself, upload them to help other aspirants and earn download credits.

What about NEET PG study material?

NEET PG is a different exam for MBBS graduates, conducted by NBEMS, and covers all the subjects of the MBBS course. Preparation relies on standard MBBS textbooks, subject-wise revision notes and a large number of practice questions. StudyZone also lists NEET PG revision notes in the NEET category; check each note's exam label.
